Day 8

Day 2 of Tykes Camp

On the 8th day of our Study Abroad trip, PR students gathered in the lobby of Hotel Colonial at 8:15 am. We were transported by the city's local van service to the University of Albizu. The students arrived for our second day of camp and settled in. We had sandwiches and coffee for breakfast. After breakfast, we began the camp activities. The students enjoyed working in groups focusing on semantics, pragmatics, reading & writing, auditory comprehension, speech sound disorders, morphology, and syntax.

The kids worked for 15 minutes at each station while Albizu and TAMUK (Texas A&M University Kingsville) students collaborated to create unique activities for each child. Many laughs were shared, and memories were created during this collaboration. They were able to learn from each other and shared a bond through the love of our field, speech, and language pathology.

After the kids went through every station, TAMUK students hosted the group activity. We played "Red Light, Green Light," and then we taught the kids the Chicken Dance.

The students moved to the cafeteria for lunch. They enjoyed arroz, pollo guisado, and salad, followed by tembleque for dessert.

The kids were then dismissed for the day, while the student clinicians shared their experiences, strengths, and weaknesses from the day. Our team leader, Chad, gave a brief summary of what the next couple of days would be like on the trip before we headed back home to Texas..

Next, we headed to an inpatient rehab, Bella Vista, where the wonderful therapy team gave us a tour of the rehabilitation department. We learned more about the duties of SLPs, OTs, and PTs in the rehab setting. It was a great experience learning more about the medical side of the SLP field.

The group headed back to Hotel Colonial for a short nap. Afterward, we enjoyed dinner at Ajies as a group, sharing good conversation over some delicious coquito! We will definitely miss the delicious food, beautiful conversations, and the culture that Puerto Rico has to offer.
