Day 1

Day 1: Traveling to Puerto Rico "Isla Del Encanto"

At approximately 5:30 pm (Monday, December 10), students from the graduate program for CSDO at Texas A&M-Kingsville arrived in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Students took off from San Antonio and on the way to Puerto Rico spent a few hours of “downtime” exploring the Miami International Airport (they even got a stranger to capture the memory).

After what seemed like an eternity the cohort arrived in Puerto Rico and were greeted by Matt and Chad from Therapy Abroad. Thanks to the Therapy Abroad program, TAMUK graduate students will be collaborating with Albizu University students to host Tykes Camp In Mayagyez, Puerto Rico. Tykes Camp is a camp dedicated to improving the quality of life of children with special needs. After completing their first externship our students are beyond excited to implement their newfound clinical skills learned in their pediatric and some adult externships. This is an amazing opportunity and we can't wait to learn more about Puerto Rico and the bilingual and cultural aspects of the speech pathology field.

On their first night students got to enjoy famous Puerto Rican cuisine that consisted of Mofongo. Mofongo is a local favorite. It's typically made with green plantains fried and mashed together with oil, garlic, salt, and sometimes chicharrón (fried pork skin). It is usually accompanied with served on a plate with chicken, shrimp, or beef. Puerto Rico is beautiful and rich in culture; students will be able to immerse themselves in what it offers for ten days.
